Sophia Di Martino, recently announced as Tom Hiddleston’s co-star in the Disney+ Loki series, may introduce a different Trickster God into the MCU.

Loki Disney Plus Series Introduce Female Loki

The Disney+ series Loki may introduce a female version of the Trickster God into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to an inside source. In the pages of Marvel Comics, Loki has occasionally been presented in a female form. As part of The Mighty Avengers saga, which was published in 2009, Loki was reborn as a woman. The character then opted to pose as The Scarlet Witch, forming her own team of Avengers. More recently, Marvel Press published a young adult novel by Mackenzi Lee which presented Loki as pansexual and gender-fluid. Now, it seems that an alternate take on Loki may figure prominently into the MCU.

It was recently revealed that Sophia Di Martino will be appearing alongside Tom Hiddleston in Loki. The British actress is known for a number of roles on television. This past summer Di Martino had a supporting turn in Yesterday. When it came to what part she would be playing in one of the most highly anticipated projects for Disney+, some reports were unspecific. Variety, which initially broke the story, noted that it was unclear who Di Martino would be playing, and that Marvel did not comment on the casting announcement.

However, according to a source close to the production of the Disney+ series, Di Martino’s role may be extremely significant. Speaking to Deadline, the source hinted that the actress would be portraying a female version of Loki. The source added that, in effect, Di Martino would be sharing the role with Hiddleston. If true, that shifts the possibility of what the Loki series could be. It also suggests that Di Martino’s contribution goes far beyond a guest stint or even a major supporting role. But that remains to be confirmed.

What has been confirmed, so far, about Loki is that it will be released in the spring of 2021. The series, run by Michael Waldron, will follow the titular trickster as he pops up throughout human history, proving to be an unlikely influence on events. This is possible because, although Loki was killed by Thanos in the opening scene of Avengers: Infinity War, a different version of the character was set free during a pivotal moment in Avengers: Endgame. The Disney+ series will follow that version.

The news about Di Martino playing a female equivalent to Hiddleston could prove to be the biggest clue yet about the plot of the show and the level of serialization involved. It could have major implications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe more broadly, slotting in a performer that could take over the persona of Thor’s sibling. It will depend on whether audiences are receptive overall. While we’re a long way from when the series will be made available to stream, and while nothing is confirmed, this bit of insider info about the future of Loki is undoubtedly interesting.
